La plaquette promotionnelle de son éditeur le présente comme le roman le plus attendu de 2023. Les superlatifs ne manquent pas pour le qualifier. Le roman de tous les excès, de toutes les folies, pour cet ouvrage qui va bénéficier (fait rare pour être souligné) d’ une sortie mondiale le 12 Janvier 2023, résultat d’une bataille d’enchères homériques à la Foire de Francfort, entre moult éditeurs.
Une fois que tout cela est écrit, posé et enregistré, il ne reste au bout du bout qu’un roman, premier tome d’une trilogie, écrit par une autrice indienne, Deepti Kapoor remarquée
pour un premier roman en 2015, Un Mauvais Garçon. Pourquoi alors autant de battage, autant d’attente pour Age of Vice (le titre a été conservé pour sa parution française)
La lecture éclaire de manière géniale, violente et brutale cet engouement. Tout est démesuré dans ce roman, sombre, enfiévré et sensuel.
Trois personnages, trois destins vont s’entremêler, se chercher, se détruire et s’aimer dans une mégalopole tentaculaire, New Dehli. Sunny, l’héritier d’une famille d’entrepreneurs véreux, représentant d’une jeunesse dorée, pour laquelle tout est permis, dans cette cité du vice et du plaisir, vivant trop vite, trop fort et trop dangereusement. Ajay, son boy, son serviteur, représentant de l’autre face de la société indienne, la classe pauvre et exploitée. Ajay s’élève à l’ombre de Sunny, lui vouant à la fois une fidélité absolue et une dévotion de caste, tout en exécutant les basses œuvres. Neda, jeune journaliste du Dehli Post. Cynique, intelligente et pourtant parfois naïve, une simple enquête sur une affaire banale de corruption, comme il en existe des centaines dans cette ville, monstre d’urbanisation sauvage, où l’absolue modernité côtoie une pauvreté moyenâgeuse, va lui faire croiser le chemin du charismatique Sunny et Ajay. Trois vies, trois volontés vont se rencontrer à l’ombre, dans le sein, d’un quatrième personnage, omni présent, omni potens, encore plus fascinant, symbole de toutes les contradictions et autres paradoxes sociétaux indiens, la ville elle même de New Dehli.
Age of Vice est le sombre et brillant portrait d’une société indienne en pleine révolution, ployant sous les traditions millénaires, se révoltant à l’aune d’une modernité brillante, clinquante et tapageuse, sous le regard effrayé de la majorité et l’appétit éhonté de quelques privilégiés.
Age of Vice est peut être le livre le plus attendu de l’année pour son éditeur Robert Laffont. C’est surtout le livre le plus hallucinant et halluciné lu ce début d’année. Et ce choc de lecture était pour le coup pas du tout prévu !!!
L'Inde entre tradition et renouveau...
Si Sunny est un riche héritier qui a tout ce qu'il désire, , Neda, elle, est une journalise qui travaille d'arrache pied pour se faire une juste place, quant à Ajay, il fait parti de la caste la moins... Bref, il est le boy de Sunny, prêt à tout pour lui, d'une fidélité rare. A tel point, que le roman commance avec un meurtre, dont Ajay endosse la responsabilité parce que Sunny le lui demande.
Incroyable roman, un pavé dont on dévore chaque page, un vrai page-tunner.
