It's made up of three major layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis, which is the thickest and fattiest layer. Together, these layers protect the body from bacteria and pollutants in the environment, serve as a filter for toxins that can't be handled by the body's other organs, and regulate temperature.
#2 The epidermis is the layer of the skin that's visible, and it's the center of cell activity. It makes up 95 percent of the skin's cells, and they produce a fibrous protein called keratin, which gives your skin structure and resilience. #3 The dermis, the layer of skin beneath the epidermis, begins to lose thickness in your mid-twenties. The production of collagen and elastin slows down as well, and much of your skin's existing supply starts to break down.
