In the depths of the great depression a failed artist named Adolf Hitler was elected as Chancellor of Germany and like all politicians before him he came into his new position with a promise of better things to come. One of those promises was that of an automobile for the masses, a people's car that was simple, reliable and affordable for the common citizen. An engineer known for his innovative creations was tasked with designing the new machine.
His names was Ferdinand Porsche and he did not disappoint. The Volkswagen was an instant hit when it made its public debut at the Berlin auto show in 1938. A factory was constructed, the largest autonomous automobile facility in all of Europe who's sole purpose it was to produce this latest of automotive wonders but just as the first unit began to come off the line, Hitler broke his promise of better things to come.
Instead the world was plunged into the greatest war humankind had ever known. Production of the people's car came to an abrubt halt. In its place, the factory was made to churn out weapons of destruction and death. If not for the determined efforts of a humble caretaker, the Volkswagen would have ceased to exist before it was ever given the chance to live. He would risk all to save the little car, a car that would become a true icon of its time and go on to be the most successful automobile ever made.
