Twelve artists, scientists and writers embarked on a journey into Arctic Svalbard. An expedition initiated through concerns regarding global warming and narrating environmental issues, the sublime wild and beauty of the far north, history of exploration and exploitation and travel. Svalbard, an Arctic desert, has a political history that represents a micro example of the relation between Man and Nature in the development of the modern industrialised economy and its demand for natural resources.
Since its discovery in 1596, Svalbard has been in the midst of political interests in the Arctic and continues to be at the frontier of change as we seek to secure the needs for energy, industrial production and consumption. The current state of the northern environments is critical and on the edge of ecological disaster. To be able to work for raising awareness of what needs to be done to secure conservation and the future of our planet it is vital to understand environmental changes.
This book is about different responses to the encounter of a northern land and the diversity in its contributions well represents the complexity and diversity of the history, the present and the future of the Arctic.
