After studying history at St Catharine's College, Cambridge and a few years teaching, Ian trained for ordination then served as a priest for nearly twenty years in Manchester. and was made an honorary canon of Manchester Cathedral. The next twenty years were spent overseas, first as Warden of the Anglican Seminary in Lesotho and subsequently as Canon Missioner, in the Dioceses of Harare (Zimbabwe) and Botswana.
Ill health prompted a return to England for treatment, after which he became Dean of Tuam in Eire. Then there was to be a final visit to the 'mission field', serving native peoples in Canada and the United States. He received a Humanities Award from the State of Utah for his work with these peoples. Ian returned to part-time work in Clevedon in 2009 before retiring to Malvern in 2013.
