Distraught by her abusive home life, Anne runs away to a job at a distant steel mill, unaware that it is in the opening throes of an explosive labor dispute. On the strikers' side of the picket line, the mounting violence of Slaide's coworkers puts unbearable strains upon his marriage, job, and friendships. And on the owners' side, Leonhard is moving his family into the relative safety of the mill, hopeful to mend their fraying bonds in the process.
But as the upheaval spreads far beyond that picket line, it shatters all their lives and fuses them together in new and uncertain ways.
