Forty years from teenage drinking to total addiction, literally enslavement, are traced by the author whose primary objective is to show how a young man, full of promise, collapsed to become a physical and mental wreck lying incontenant and shaking uncontrollably on the floor of a bare room facing the torture of withdrawal, alone.
He clung on second by second as the clammy flesh of his once strong body felt as if it was trying to tear itself in strips from his skeleton. This was the battle of a lifetime. He could not see the enemy. There was no neck to be grasped and wrung, no face into which a fist could be driven. His mind and his body had been invaded. Creatures were alive in his bloodstream, he could feel them. Yet there remained somewhere in his brain, in a battered redoubt, one last bitterly determined defender refusing to surrender.
This last bloodied, stubborn survivor had nowhere left to go. To tired to run, prepared to die but too scared to end the torture by suicide the survivor in the redoubt fought off the darkness until the enemy slowly began to slink away leaving an immense emptiness, exhaustion. The second book describes the twenty years since the first major battle ended. Recovery, the financing, the schemes laid bare with the relapses, the successes and finally the victorious ending of the war.
The two books are intended to show it is never too early to beware of the dangers hidden within the world of ethanol and it is never too late to turn on your demons. Alcoholism is not a disease, it is an illness and you can cure it permanently by your own actions. You are not cursed for life. You can do it, I know you can.
