Sainte Nore is The Shield, a position of great honor among The Blades of the Night. He is tasked, alongside his brothers and sisters in The Blades of the Night, with protecting the Barrier from the creatures called Malignin. They seep out of the shadows every night and assault the mountain that the Barrier calls home. And every night they are repelled. But with the Blades' ever-decreasing numbers and the seemingly endless Malignin, it's only a matter of time before the beasts succeed in their mission.
