When Madeline's husband died she couldn't seem to shake his memory and move on. Now a widow of two years and still wearing black, she embarked upon a month-long trip by stage coach to visit her sister in California. The other passengers did distract her from her grief, to some degree. Two of them, cowboys who had worked together for years and were now giving up the cowboy life to become miners, seemed to like each other a little too much.
Madeline had heard of men with twisted sexual desires, but hadn't ever met one. She had a chance to get to know these men very well when a cave-in trapped the three of them in an old mine next to one of the stage stops. It would take days, if not weeks for people to dig them out. Maddie saw this as her chance to save these men from themselves; to cure their affliction. So, she offered to show them that loving a woman could be better than loving a man.
The only problem was, they weren't afflicted. They had no clue what she was talking about, but when a beautiful, young woman offers to mate with you . you don't turn her down. It would have turned out fine for all of them except that all that . mating . did what nature intended. When she finally got to her sister the young widow realized that, before she went back home, she needed to come up with an explanation of why she was pregnant.
