I was always told when you got a phone call in the middle of the night, it brought bad news. So it was when I vaguely heard my phone buzzing on our bedside table. I grunted and swore. What didn't help was that Amanda was a high-profile government civil servant, not indispensable but important enough for the government of the day to turn a blind eye to her private life. I was a writer, of fiction stories who had by sheer luck written several best sellers, the last two staying in the top ten of the NYT best sellers list for over 3 months. So much for low profiles.
