Résumé

A memoir of a young Englishman arriving in Nassau Bahamas in the 1970s to take up the post of chief inspector of the Bahamas Humane Society unaware of the frustrations, dangers and horrors he is to confront. Initially shocked by the scale of animal cruelty, and despite death threats and brushes with voodoo, he continues undaunted to help the suffering iconic surrey horses, the roaming dogs known locally as potcakes, and the shocking cruelty of the Hobby Horse Race Track.
The work is relentless, and the emotional strain becomes overwhelming and soon takes its toll, but luckily the good times compensate for the bad. He is helped in his mission by a small motley crew of staff and volunteers, and his faithful dog Condor and is welcomed by both the local and expat community, So take a visit to vintage Nassau and follow him as he adjusts to the Bahamian way of life, explores the island and escapes the harrowing work by chilling out on Paradise Island which was then still an oasis of calm.
