Denver District Attorney's Office A History of Crime in the Mile High City (1869-2021) views the history of Denver through the lens of the highest-ranking officials in law enforcement.  From Colorado before statehood to today, each district attorney is profiled as are notable cases they handled during their terms of office. Denver's history is explored through the crimes of each era, which often reflect the attitudes and politics of the day.  The first chapter begins in 1869 with Vincent Markham, the first district attorney, who served before Colorado achieved statehood.
The book concludes in 2021 with Beth McCann, Denver's first female district attorney. The district attorney has always been an elected official. The district attorneys were never career prosecutors in the early years. Of the 29 district attorneys covered in this book, 20 served one term and 9 served two or more. Similar crime themes run throughout Denver's history: domestic violence, organized crime, murder, corruption, and the difficulties law enforcement have connecting with the community.

Mitch Morrissey worked in the Denver district attorney's office for more than 30 years, including three terms as the elected district attorney (2005 to 2017). He is an international expert on the use of DNA technology in criminal prosecutions and exonerating innocent people. After retiring from the district attorney's office, he co-founded United Data Connect, a company that helps solve cold cases using DNA and genetic genealogy.
Mitch is a fourth-generation Colorado native. Norm Brisson worked as the legal administrator in both the Denver city attorney's office, the Denver district attorney's office, and the Colorado governor's office. He taught at the University of Colorado Denver for more than 30 years. He retired as the court administrator at Lakewood Municipal Court. Originally from upstate New York, he has lived in Denver since 1978.
