For Kate, there was a before and an after the phone call in which she found out the man she had known and loved was in fact a cop sent to spy on her. In the aftermath of that discovery, she was swept into a court case with seven other women who had also been deceived into relationships with police and were seeking justice and answers from the Met. Yet, as the others were forced to settle, Kate was given the choice to pursue her case in court, and in doing so became embroiled in a human rights case that would take years of her life to fight, at times without funding or representation, enduring bullying and further surveillance.
Her persistence for truth resulted in a landmark judgement that the police violated her human rights in an operation that had been 'unlawful' and 'unnecessary in a democratic society'. It was a damning indictment of Britain's secret political police.
