From the start of his journey from Bloomfield, Eli worried about what his homecoming was going to be like. He wouldn't have bothered to come back to the Amish community he ran away from if he hadn't found out his mother was dying. She sent word by one of his sisters that Mamm wanted to see him. Eli did miss his siblings and felt like most of them would welcome him home. What lay ahead of him after his mother died was what worried him.
His cold-hearted father considered everything around him his possessions; his land, his money, his children, and his wife. Eli crossed over to be English which was not what Enos Yutzy could stand. Now he was about to lose his wife. Eli was afraid the man wouldn't be fit to get along with after that happened. Eli had to resign himself to the fact he had crossed over once to get away from his father.
He might just have to cross back over again, and then all he'd have would be unpleasant memories of when Eli Yutzy Came Home.
