As the CEO, I was poised and ready to get retired after more than three decades of a successful career in the oil and gas industry. But what was meant to be a routine business trip on November 21, 2017, quickly spiraled into a nightmare. We were falsely accused as American spies, accused of treason, corruption, and embezzlement, we-the Citgo 6-found ourselves caught in a geopolitical storm between the US and Venezuela For nearly five years, we endured the harrowing experience of being political pawns, subjected to physical and mental torture, and held hostage in Venezuela. My memoir, From Hero to Villain: My True Story of the Citgo 6, is not just an account of these dark days, but a tale of resilience, love, and unyielding faith. With the help of my courageous wife, we smuggled over 1, 000 secret letters to each other over three years, maintaining our hope and connection through a secret code-a poignant and desperate act reminiscent of Anne Frank's diary. My experience has transformed me into a vocal advocate against hostage diplomacy, working with various foundations to support hostages and their families, and pushing for legislative changes to ensure they receive the support they need.
