Scarlet lives with her father in a humdrum village where nothing ever seems to happen, and where she can't seem to help to get into trouble. In an attempt to get his troublesome daughter off his hands, her father arranges for her to be engaged to the local lumberjack's son. But Scarlet has no intention of being a dutiful wife, and one day, when she is walking in the woods on the way to take her fiancee a basket of fruit, she has an encounter that will change her life.
