Résumé

"Can I tell you a secret? Sometimes I think I would be better off if my house burned down." It had been years since I had felt well. That's because I was living with the enemy ... an enemy that wanted me dead. This enemy did not brandish guns or knives, but it was just as dangerous as if it did. My enemy was simply common household mould ... that black stuff you see in the corners of damp buildings and pay little mind to, if you're as clueless as I was when I started out.
The mould in my house was malicious, destructive and seemingly invincible. It came in all types, colours and furriness factors - a family of insidious gangsters who watched my every move night and day, waiting for an opportunity when my back was turned before pouncing: on me, on my food, on my clothes, on my furniture, on my home. A Mafia clan whose party I had crashed when I moved in and who now wanted me gone.
And under the watchful eye of their Mamma, the very-much-to-be-feared black mould I came to know as 'Maria the black widow' -- the most unobtrusive but also the most dangerous of the lot, sitting quietly in her corner expelling her venom at all hours -- they began to let me know who was boss ... with disastrous consequences. Mould made me sick; mould destroyed my possessions; mould made people think I was crazy; mould came close to killing me many times; and mould forced me to wake up and find the help I needed before it was too late.
The result was a 10-year-long journey of ups and downs, mistakes and breakthroughs, disillusionment and education, joy and fear, and, above all, hope and renewal, the bulk of which I eventually compiled into a book -- this book. In here, you will read about my struggles with mould, and particularly black mould (Stachybotrys chartarum): about my mysterious illness that appeared to vanish whenever I was away from home; about what I tried to do to make myself better before finally figuring out what was wrong; about how I miraculously stumbled upon an angel who helped me overcome much of the illness that had plagued my existence; about the methods, solutions and strategies that I employed to deal with the situation; and about some amazing truths that I learned about my body, that mould helped me uncover.
Topics covered in this book include:-Mould and its effects on health;-Why toxic mould illness is becoming more and more prevalent;-Good housekeeping for keeping mould at bay;-The blood -- mould's first attack point;-The microbiome -- mould's second attack point;-The importance of vitamins, antioxidants and essential fats;-The necessity of fire and medicinal smoke in purifying mouldy air;-Humidity -- mould's friend;-Movement -- mould's Kryptonite;-Environmental toxicity -- mould's hired hitman.
This book is not intended as a substitute for medical advice for anyone who believes they may be suffering from mould toxicity, or CIRS. Rather, it is an attempt to raise greater awareness about the very real health dangers that mould poses. The only advice I would venture to give anyone in my position is, first of all, don't underestimate what you're going through. Secondly, if you have a choice, leave.
You may feel strong when you first move in with mould; believe me, you will not feel so great after a prolonged tango with it. And if you are a medical professional reading this, I urge you to continue to educate yourself on the topic of mould. You may be saving lives without knowing it. The book contains medical references at the back and a clickable table of contents.
