If I were to tell you that Faeries are real the chances are that you would either laugh out loud at me or tell me that I was insane. But when I tell you that some of the worlds greatest and artistic minds also believed in them, would you still laugh? Shakespear wrote plays and sonnets about them. WBYeats wrote poems to them, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini travelled to the wilds of Yorkshire when two little girls took pictures of them.
OK so they admitted that all except the fifth picture were fake but the fact remains that they believed that they were real. So plays, sonnets, poems, stories, reported sightings and folklorists all believe at least in the possibility of their existence. So do I still sound like a lunatic ?The fact is that the Faery realm only entered the realm of fantasy in the last century. Our ancestors not only believed in them they also feared them, folklore is filled with dire warnings about them .
Our ancestors would certainly never have considered that stories of faery were suitable for children's bedtime stories.. We have Walt Disney to thank for making faeries into cartoon characters, But there is nothing funny about these guys. Nothing funny at all. They are mercurial, changeable and totally unpredictable. I can say this with confidence because I have seen them.
