"The Amorous Apprentice" is an erotic novel inspired by the early life of Restif de la Bretonne, who is considered to be one of the most original and controversial French writers of the eighteenth century. Some critics have praised him as the founder of realism in French literature, while others have condemned him as a "vile pornographer". Restif was eighteen years old when he was apprenticed to Monsieur Fournier, a printer in the provincial town of Auxerre in Lower Burgundy.
He was later to look back fondly on his days at Auxerre as the happiest of his life.
