The burning times were a time of mass hysteria, fear and danger, particularly for women. That is not to say that men did not burn also. For anyone different or who lived outside of society the danger was increased. Often old, mentally unstable and poor these women were victimised and blamed for any unfortunate fate that befell both a village or an individual. Today we read these transcripts of the trials and imprisonment of uneducated and ofden mentally impaired victims in total disbelief.
The biggest culprit in persecuting these people was the church itself yet it remains tight-lipped as a call for pardons for these victims increases in demand. The Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon did at least offer an apology, though better than nothing it does not go far enough. We are calling for these people to receive a full pardon and acquittal of any criminal charge an apology and perhaps a monument so that society never forgets what was done to them in the name of righteousness.
