Résumé

The greatest love story that never was! When they were in college Jake's love for Mary was beyond description. They had sworn devotion to each other and assumed their lives would be always be together. But that age old story, "their families could not agree", drove them apart. Now, with momentous events exploding around him, State Prosecutor Jake Cohen is assigned to the case that, he is told, will make his reputation and insure his promotion.
Opening the case files, he is astonished to discover that the object of the prosecution is Mary Newton. She's the Director of the SA now, but thirty years ago she was nearly his wife. They haven't spoken since he left her waiting at the altar. His team works to keep the case on track, but they're threatened by their boss's increasingly erratic behavior. Jake can feel his focus slipping, and senses that he's being carried far too close to obsession, but feels compelled to try and re-connect with someone who meant a lot to him, back when he still thought a lot of himself.
For her part, Mary wants none of it. Their past is far behind her and in the present she is a strong and capable woman. Nonetheless, the dangers in the accusations against her are obvious and she walks a fine line, trying to find accommodation with the Prosecutor without getting too close. Government forces are closing in; both Jake and Mary are forced to make choices they would never have imagined, and face new realities that challenge everything they thought they knew.

À propos de l'auteur

Biographie de Waran Payce

Waran Payce has been writing all his life; everything from grant proposals, which are a mixture of fiction and non-fiction, to course curriculum, to song lyrics, to short stories. He is old enough to have had a draft lottery number (he chose not to go), and young enough to remember what it was in seventy-two, (fourteen). An avid reader since he learned how, he was inspired at an early age by Kerouac's classic "On the Road", and chose to emulate Dean Moriarity's madness.
The following forty-some years have been an unending parade of new locations, new job titles and new wives. In the early eighties he sold all his belongings and moved to Belize, where he pursued a Gilligan life-style with the intention of staying forever. The attorney general had other ideas, so he returned to California. He ran unsuccessfully for President against Ronald Reagan while living in Texas, and taught at a tech school in Tennessee.
He currently lives in a canyon outside Stone City, CO.
