Carla Stevens, a young woman who has recently moved to San Francisco, lives in an apartment building with an old-fashioned elevator. One night when she returns home from work, a young passenger asks Carla if she would allow her to send the elevator to her floor first as her boyfriend would become angry if she were late. Mildly irritated, Carla quickly forgets the incident until, Joey, a detective, calls on her because of the apparent suicide of a middle-aged woman in her building.
The two begin dating and at a restaurant near her apartment building, Carla spots the young woman she saw in the elevator, but the woman flees before Joey can talk with her. Other officers are investigating a different death near the same building. Joey discovers the two incidents may be related and Carla finds herself inadvertently part of both.
