Maplewood was the kind of town where nothing ever happened-until it did. On a chilly Friday night, 14-year-old Jenny Hartman was lying on her bed, her mind lost in a mystery novel, with Scot, her golden retriever, snoozing at her feet. Scot was more than just a pet; he was her partner in crime (solving, that is). The town was silent, as usual. The wind rustled the leaves outside, and an owl hooted somewhere in the distance.
But then, out of nowhere, Scot's ears perked up, and he let out a low growl.
