Résumé

Twenty-five-year-old Anthony Goldman is the son of a Jewish exile from the Soviet Union and an Italian refugee who escaped Mussolini. An aspiring expert in post-Soviet Studies, Goldman decides to join the Peace Corps and serve in the newly independent state of Kazakhstan before settling into an academic career.  However, after making a deal with the CIA to gather information on the potential for ethnic strife in the oil rich Caspian Region, Goldman learns that his understanding of the world, his country and himself is fraught with misconceptions and lies.  Eventually, he must decide to honor his deal with the CIA or fight for the local woman and culture he has fallen in love with. The Toughest Job follows Anthony's adventure across Central Asia's steppes and mountains as he works with local operatives, allies with the leader of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, and forges an unlikely friendship with a former Soviet Army sniper reluctant to trust him.
