In the time when the first pyramid is being built Lady Horisis is commanded to go to the town of Zau in the Nile Delta, to investigate the corruption of the local Governor. As a woman given a man's job, and as she struggles with her own doubts about her value as Grand Vizier Imhotep's wife, Horisis finds she must lead the people of Egypt in a battle against an overwhelming supernatural enemy newly returned to the land of the Nile. Can she overcome the threat of Bas, a demi-goddess who once stalked the Two Lands and hunted Horisis' ancestors as if they were mere cattle?
