Résumé

The book contains original contributions from leading international scientists working in the field of multiphoton absorptions and excitations and their practical applications. From the first theoretical prediction of the phenomena at the beginning of the nineteen thirties through the first practical demonstration seen some thirty years later, the topic has today evolved into a large branch of nonlinear optics.
The different chapters of the book treat this large research field comprehensively: from basic phenomena and their description, material design, synthesis, elaboration and optimisation, through experimental characterization techniques to practical applications such as optical power limiting, nano and microstructuration and photodynamic therapy. Although the contributions address almost exclusively organic materials, currently the group know to have the largest multiphoton transition cross sections whose properties can be tailored for targeted applications, the described characterization techniques as well as applications are universal and can be done with other materials.
The book is addressed not only to the researchers active in the field but also to graduate students, newcomers and development engineers interested in practical application of multiphoton induced effects.

À propos des auteurs

Ileana Rau graduated in 1994 from the University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania. She has obtained her PhD degree in 2002 at the same university. She has spent several years as post-doc, first at French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) laboratory in Saclay and then at Angers University, where she received the Habilitation Degree (HDR, habilitation pour diriger les recherches). Currently Ileana Rau is Professorat University Politehnica of Bucharest, Romania.
Ileana Rau has made significant contributions to the development of optical materials science and to the understanding of linear and nonlinear optical properties of organic materials and their application in photonics and biophotonics. She made also important contribution in popularizing nonlinear optics and material science through organization of international conferences, workshops and editorial services.
Ileana Rau is fellow of SPIE and member of SPIE Women in Optics circle. Francois Kajzar graduated from Jagellonian University, Krakow, Poland in 1965 and has got PhD degree at the same university in 1970. He is considered as one of the pioneers of organic nonlinear optics, contributing to its development through original experimental techniques, material development, nonlinearlight propagation description and new fields openings.
F. Kajzar contnbuted also significantly towards the popularization of photonics by organizing international conferences, workshops and schools as well as editorial services. He is Laureate of European Descartes Prize, recipient of Rockard Prize and Eminent Scientist of Riken (Japan). Most of his scientific career is with French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), where he was working as Research Director.
After retirement from CEA he became professorat Angers University (France) and at Politehnica University of Bucharest (Romania).
