Playing an instrument requires imagination, free association, individuality, eagerness to experiment. However, the prerequisites for such artistic liberties are certain physical and physiological facts which can be described very clearly. Their knowledge can open up new areas of creative freedom. In his book, published in 1972 for the first time, Gerhard Mantel tries to explain concepts of cello teaching which are classed between freedom and arbitrariness.
His surprising results have meanwhile become established in general string instrument lessons to a large extent.
