Goehr brings an ancient world to life in his setting of eight texts by Hesiod and Homer. Translated into English by Dorothy Wilder and the composer, this song cycle uses the classic stories of Prometheus and Pandora, myths of the Gods and fables to tell a story of strife-its nature and origins. Notwithstanding its dark subject matter, Goehr's music is energetic with a fevered piano part in constant motion beneath the more lyrical vocal writing.
A rewarding challenge for singer and pianist. Instrumentation : low voice and piano op. 76
