Résumé
This book contains a total of 29 papers, 3 of them being keynote, from the 11th Symposium on Trends in the Application of Mathematics to Mechanics which was held at the National University of Ireland, Galway from July 9th-14th, 2000. Organized by International Society for the Interaction of Mathematics, the papers represent the contributions of many leading researchers who have been recognized internationally for their pioneering work at the interface of mathematics and mechanics. While this volume covers a wide range of problems, there is particular emphasis on qualitative behaviour of partial differential equations, estimation procedures for flow problems, dynamic problems in solid mechanics and singular behaviour in mechanics. The papers place strong focus on new theories and new results and on innovative interaction between mathematics and mechanics. The significance of the close links between mathematics and mechanics has long been recognised and this book is further evidence of the beneficial influence of these two disciplines on each other. Most importantly, the book draws on inputs from mathematicians, mechanicians, engineers and scientists and this interdisciplinary mix of contributors highlights the broad appeal of the publication to all those interested in the interaction of mathematics with mechanics.
