This book advocates a new approach to English
pronunciation teaching, in which the goal is mutual
intelligibility among non-native speakers, rather than the imitation of native speakers. English pronunciation is considered in an international context, with the emphasis on phonological intelligibility for listeners for whom English is not their first language. The author proposes a new pronunciation syllabus, the Lingua Franca Core, based on findings from empirical research where English pronunciation is examined in its sociolinguistic context.
