Dublin, 1918. At an understaffed hospital in the city centre, Nurse Julia Power is called upon to care for expectant mothers who have recently come down with an unfamiliar flu. Into Julia's regimented world step two outsiders : Doctor Kathleen Lynn, on the run from the police, and a young volunteer, Bridie Sweeney. Over the following days, and in the darkness and intensity of a tiny ward, these three women change others' lives in unexpected ways.
