The General Motors Technical Center, designated a National Historic Landmark in 2014, is an icon of midcentury design and the prototype of the modern American corporate campus. Located in Warren, Michigan, it has provided the nurturing environment in which GM has developed some of the most iconic American automobiles. The GM Technical Center was the first major commission awarded to celebrated modern architect Eero Saarinen independently of his father, Eliel, and its story offers a unique perspective on Eero's work.
In Where Today Meets Tomorrow, Susan Skarsgard, a General Motors designer for twenty-five years and the founder of the GM Design Archive Er Special Collections, weaves a fascinating and detailed insider's account of the early days of General Motors, the initiation of the project under Eliel Saarinen, its subsequent design and construction under Eero Saarinen, and the enthusiastic acclaim the campus has received since its opening in 1956.
Saarinen's design was meticulously planned and crafted to create a cohesive environment, from the tableware in the executive dining rooms and the stylish integrated furnishings to the rhythmic proportions applied throughout its spaces and the organization of its buildings. Saarinen invited many leading lights of midcentury modernism to collaborate on the project as design consultants or artists, including Harry Bertoia, Alexander Girard, Ruth Adler Schnee, Florence Knoll and Alexander Calder.
